Usually, when I have to write a bio, I just say that I am a person. That is not a given, at this point in time and space, so I do feel the need to specify.
When I was thirteen, my therapist pointed out that I liked being different and difficult. He advised me that this was an illusion, that I was not different from other people. He tried to show me how I was the same. In that moment, he failed. Years later, I found a letter that he wrote me and it shaped the trajectory of the rest of my life. When I look at biology, heritage, culture, education, location, and a thousand other variables, I found that I am exactly who I am supposed to be.
I try to reach other people. I seek connection – not just among people, but among ideas, organizations, and religions. There is nothing special about me, I am completely ordinary. Seeing this, loving this aspect of myself, is a gift.
My talent is that I can take my one sentence bio and turn it into the required half a page, without adding much. My name is Rosa-May and I am a person; a person with a teddy bear. His name is Pookie.
